In this class you will learn what you need to know to get you safely through the critical period of the first 72 hours of being stranded in the wilderness.

Topics Covered:

  • Hazards - Learn what actually kills people and how to prevent it
  • Survival - Mind and Awareness- Develop an understanding of the mentality required of the survivor
  • Emergency Shelters - Constructing quick shelters out of natural and man made materials
  • Water - Finding, collecting, and making safe to drink 
  • Fire- Construction of a 1 match fire in any conditions
  • Signaling for Help - Learn how to help Search and Rescue find you
  • Navigation - Learn how to find directions from your surroundings
  • Food - and why it is NOT a priority

Wilderness Survival Skills II

      This class takes you beyond the first 72 hours of an emergency survival situation and introduces you to basic Wilderness Living/Primitive skills. We address longer term issues such as more permanent shelter, container construction, locating, acquiring, and storing food, and fabricating primitive tools.

Possible Topics Covered:
*These will fluctuate based upon the group's experience level and time available.

  • Hazards:
  • Distinguishing between real and perceived threats to survival (regional emphasis)
  • Wilderness Mind and Awareness:
    -Introduction to change in mentality and pace required to perform these skills
    -Introduction to Core Routines of awareness that foster a native knowledge of landscape
  • Shelter:
    -Construction of longterm shelters from natural materials
    -Learn to make cordage (rope) from natural materials
  • Water:
    -Primitive methods of water filtration and purification using natural materials
  • Fire:
    -Making fire by friction (no matches or modern tools)
    -Carrying fire (coal extenders)
  • Tools:
    -Proper knife selection and use
    -Shaping and fire hardening wood tools
    -Introduction to bones tools
    -Introduction to stone tools
    -Making baskets from natural materials
  • Foraging:
    -Introduction to locating, identifying, and processing local plant foods and medicines
    -Introduction to reading a landscape for animal sign
    -Introduction to basic primitive technologies of hunting, trapping, and snaring
    -Primitive food preparation and storage techniques
  • Stalking and Movement:
    -Learn how to maximize the potential of your sensory awareness
    -Introduction to natural camouflage and stealth movement
